More Biography for the King
Louis XIV, France's Sun King, had the longest reign in European history (1643-1715). During this time he brought absolute monarchy to its height, established a glittering court at Versailles, and fought most of the other European countries in four wars. The early part of his reign (1643-61), while Louis was young, was dominated by the chief minister Cardinal Mazarin. In the middle period (1661-85) Louis reigned personally and innovatively, but the last years of his personal rule (1685-1715) were beset by problems
Max Webers Magical Universe
the same area where the rise of Protestant, capitalist, rationalistic
societies emerged. This was part of Max Weber’s ‘disenchantment of the
world’. The turning point was in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
There was then a revolutionary movement, from the mystical, magical
universe of medieval Catholicism to the clockwork, mechanical cosmology of
eighteenth-century rationalism. There was an expulsion of the concept of
evil, first among the elite and then, increasingly, among the hitherto
‘superstitious’ folk. The process paralleled and was linked to other
attacks on ‘irrationality’, the irrationality of despotic government,
peasant ownership, familistic sentiments."
Chateau de Versailles "Palace of Versailles" and beggining of script
I King Louis XIV, had a great interest in Versailles. I settled on the royal hunting lodge at Versailles and over the following decades had it expanded into one of the largest palaces in the world. I did this because I desired this place to be the new centre for my royal court. I hope to extract more control of government from the nobility, and distance myself from Paris. This will aid me in my transformation of the of the French government into a centralized absolute monarchy where I, the King will have the last say.
My first campaign of this building commenced with Plaisirs de l'lle enchantee of 1664, this led to the War of devolution where I wage war against Spain. My second campaign ended this war. My third campaign was the end of the Dutch war (1678). My fourth building campaign followed after a crushing defeat at the War of League of Augsburg (1699 -1710.
I have put much effort in moving this from Paris and rebuilding it with such extravagances in order to make it dazzling, awe-inspiring setting for state affairs and the reception of foreign dignitaries. At Versailles, I the king alone commanded attention. Several reasons have been suggested for the creation of the extravagant and stately palace, as well as the relocation of the monarchy's seat but I know what its for. I have been able to relocate control and centralize it thus from elegance of the buildings. The more power I gained, the more expanded this palace and so I was able to gain much from this and say much in accordance to ruling France.
I am also a patronage of arts, I supported the royal court and everyone below the royal court. I allowed Classical French Literature to flourish by protecting such writers as Racine and La Fontaine, whos works are terrific and will be forever influential. I also had great patronised the visual arts by funding artists such as Charles Le Brun, Pierre Mignard, and others who will be influential in Europe. I also have funded artists in music such as Lully, and Francois Couperin. Most importantly I enjoyed dancing and playing in different court performances, mainly the Sun.
I gained from these arts a big deal, so I made them a big deal. Art is always on duty for political movements, propaganda changed but ideas still the same, showing greatness and power. I posed for many painters so I can have my image everywhere in France for more infleunce, and many paintings that record positive historic moments for France. This propaganda and approach helped me maintain rule in France for a long time and also helped increase my power through display of majestic decoration and arts. I have set a trend in many parts of the world and revolutionized fashion and elegance.
The doctrine of Divine right of kings said I only reckon with god, and it serves as one of my supports of the dictatorship which I exercise over the Church of France. I have declared Jansenism to be religion of heretics and to be against the church and thus Me, the King of France and hope to end it by 1713.
Gallicanism is the belief that popular civil authority, this is what I believe in and is basically why I have power over the pope. I believe in holy scriptsures and traditional ways but these views dont usually interfere with public opinion. Aspiring to be master in my Church, I chastised Protestants and Jansenists as disobedient subjects, thus shows my disapproval for going again catholicsim because that would be like going against me, the King of France.
So in regards of the Galileo verdict, Since he did defy the powers of the Catholic church with such radical ideals that he published. He is in my opinion guilty of being a heretic. If he defies the teachings of the catholic church then he defies the teachings of my religion.. King Louis the XIV. I am trying to set up a centralized power in France with a United religion that follows my authority. I have already chastised Protestants and Jansenists as disobedient subjects and will not allow Galileo to get away with his heretic views. It is okay to have an opinion but this goes against the teachings of the Kings Religion and will effect the views of my fellow citizens. I have spent too much time and money on the elegance of the arts and other things to revolutionize France into a social and elegant trend setting type of people. I have also spent much time in centralizing my power through building the palace of Versailes through making it elegant. I will not let Galileo's theory of the world revolving around the sun and copernicus type thinking to possibly affecting my hard work of centralizing control and making my French citizens happy from one man. I cannot allow that and will hold Galileo Guilty.
